The Pennypinchers Night MTB Relay

The Pennypinchers Night MTB Relay

The idea of including a Night MTB Relay at Cairnbrogie came to the Pennypinchers Adventure Racing Team three years ago while they were tidying up the markers and branding after the Pennypinchers Cairnbrogie Trail Run. As it got dark and the lights came on at the Barn we realised what a perfect night time venue this would be.

Riding at night on a 5km marked track in a relay team of two allows the racers to get a small insight into the night time world that is part of Adventure racing but they are in a safe contained space and hopefully won’t get lost.

Riding at night is not easy and good lighting is essential. Hanno Smit of the Merrell Adventure Addicts recommends the following.

Make sure that what ever lights you are using you have ridden with them in the dark before the event

Make sure that you have spare batteries (event new ones can run out)

I like to ride with two sets of lights. One on my helmut which allows me to shine a light where I am looking and then a brighter light on my handle bars.

Make sure that you ride within the capabilities of yourself and the lighting system you have. There will always be someone with brighter lights than you . Don’t worry stay in your light zone try not to look at other outside light sources as the can blind you for a short time.

The route around the Cairnbrogie Dam is about 5km and riders rider for two hours and the team who complete the most laps is the winner. This year the route will be open from 16;30  until 17;30 to allow riders a look at the route in day light. This should allow for some of the faster teams to clock up more laps but also settle the nerves of the novice riders.

The Night MTB Relay is the second leg in the Off the Treble Hook Challenge (sponsored by Off the Hook and Robberg Seafood)  . This Challenge Trophy is given to the athlete with the fastest combined times in Pennypinchers Cairnbrogie Easter Trail Run, The Pennypinchers Night MTB Relay and the Pennypinchers Easter Surf Ski Challenge. It is also part of the Plett Easter Games held every year in conjunction with Plett Tourism

The Pennypinchers Easter Surf Ski challenge 4th April 2015

The Pennypinchers Easter Surf Ski challenge 4th April 2015

The Pennypinchers Easter Surf Ski Challenge stated 8 years ago in the hay day of surf ski paddling in this country. Billy Harker and the Discovery Surf Ski Series were getting record entries of surf ski racers in Cape Town and Durban. The Plett Paddling Club decided it wanted a slice of the action and the event was born with the initial sponsorship from local Pennypinchers operator Sean Gannon.

The race quickly grew with Tv coverage and bigger sponsorship from Pennypinchers Head Office and PPC Cement  it became a regular event on the Surf Ski Calendar. With the Tv coverage show casing the magnificent Plettenberg Bay the race attracted paddlers form all over the country and the lure of great prize money from the sponsors attracted the best of the best.

Sean Rice arrived on the surf ski scene with his win in Plettenberg Bay on a Think Evo Ski that has seen him go on to win many local and international races on that same brand of ski.

Another young winner was Brandon Van Der Walt who has since gone on to become a World Champion Marathon Paddler. Other men’s paddlers who have topped the podium at this race are the Mocke brothers Dawid and Jasper, and  Hank McGregor who between them hold more current and past World Championship medals in canoeing and Surf Ski paddling . The ladies podium has been dominated over the years by Ladies world champion paddlers Nicci Mocke and local Mich  Eray.

With the Bay offering many different course options the route is generally set by local paddlers Neal Stephenson and Stef Le Roux who’s vast paddling and NSRI experience results in a course that is challenging yet safe form all levels of paddlers.  Last year it was decided to have the Doubles race late in the afternoon on the same day as the singles . This allows the paddlers the option to chill on the beach and then enjoy great hospitality at the Plett Surf Lifesaving Club afterwards.

The Surf Ski Race is also the last leg in the Off the Treble Hook Challenge (sponsored by Off the Hook and Robberg Seafood  . This Challenge Trophy is given to the athlete with the fastest combined times in Pennypinchers Cairnbrogie Easter Trail Run, The Pennypinchers Night MTB Relay and the Pennypinchers Easter Surf Ski Challenge.

This year Stanley Island will once again be hosting some the country’s top paddlers and offering discounted rates to any other competitors in the events hosted by the Pennypinchers Adventure Racing Team over Easter Weekend. It is also part of the Plett Easter Games held every year in conjunction with Plett Tourism

The Pennypinchers Cairnbrogie Easter Trail Run (The Milk and Cookies Run)

The Pennypinchers Cairnbrogie Easter Trail Run

This trail run will be run for the fifth time this year. The run started with Cairnbrogie Farm owner Andrew Hill offering the Barn and his farm as a venue to do a trail run on Easter Friday. That year the long route was only 12km and was one for the first trail runs in the Plett area. The following year the race grew and with the beginnings of the Robberg Coastal Corridor the race will be remembered for the fresh farm milk and cookies (thanks to Nguni restaurant). With the donations towards the Robberg Coastal Corridor Landowners association the racers can enjoy a feeling of giving back a bit towards the conservation of this very unique section of coastline. So unique in fact that only last year a brand new species of Fyn Bos was discovered on the Fyn Bos reserve through which the runners have the privilege of running.

The Cairnbrogie Easter trail run has morphed in to a great feel good family outing. There is a short Spur Adventure trail which is pram friendly (1,5km) which can be enjoyed by anyone during the morning although there is a mass start for all the kids who have their parents competitive genes .Also on offer area 5 and 12 kilometer for the younger or fun runners. At the sharp end of the trail runs is a 18km run which will test the best runners and with R8000-00 prize money courtesy of Pennypinchers and PPC up for grabs we are seeing more and more of the regions top runners participating.

The Pennypinchers Adventure Racing Team also host about 20 kids form Die Sterreweg School for kids with special needs. This is a real highlight for the Team as well as for the kids.
With loads to eat and drink including a drink of fresh farm milk and a cookie for all finishers  this is a great family outing on Good Friday Morning.

The Cairnbrogie Trail Run is the first leg of the  Off the Treble Hook Challenge (sponsored by Off the Hook and Robberg Seafood  . This Challenge Trophy is given to the athlete with the fastest combined times in Pennypinchers Cairnbrogie Easter Trail Run, The Pennypinchers Night MTB Relay and the Pennypinchers Easter Surf Ski Challenge.
